Medical Marijuana Edibles in Florida?

New Kinds of Edibles Are (Hopefully) Coming to Florida.

What kind of edibles are available now?  UPDATE HERE

Up until now, medical marijuana edibles in traditional forms have been very limited in Florida. For the most part what has been available to patients to consume has been tinctures, drops, and sprays.

However, Surterra Wellness, one of the licensed legal distributors of medical pot in the state of Florida, is looking to change all that. Surterra recently filed an official petition with the Florida Department of Health’s Office of Medical Marijuana Use to begin producing and providing dispensaries with marijuana candies and baked goods. The idea behind this product expansion, according to the Surterra president, Wesley Reynolds, is to offer patients a wide variety of options in the hopes that this will further deter them from going for more addictive medications, like opioids

While this may be good news to patients, those who are not fans of medical marijuana fear that these products would be confused with a regular candy, and therefore could be a greater risk of kids getting their hands on them. The petition states clearly that any of the candies will be clearly marked stating what it is and that it is not for children.

Medical marijuana edible options?

Across the nation, some of the new product choices can include chocolate bars or chews, soft confections, like taffy or gummies, or hard candies, like peppermints or lozenges. A variety of baked goods are also being proposed. This includes a variety of cupcakes, brownies, cookies and granola bars. The final items are capsules or medical marijuana pressed into pill form.

What do medical marijuana edibles look like?

The State law bans edible products shaped like animals, humans, and cartoons, and prohibits color additives or edibles that resemble “commercially available candy.”  All new products must adhere to the state’s size and dosage requirements in addition to being packaged and marked clearly with the ingredients and amount of THC per edible.  So, as soon as the State announces the guidelines, dispensaries will be able to start producing

While there is something to be said for the concern that children would be tempted to try these items if they do look like regular candy and cookies, the Dispensaries must follow the State rules to mitigate the possibility of confusion.
