With the recent declaration from Donald Trump regarding the opioid crisis in America, some doctors at the University of Florida have set out on a five-year study to determine whether medical marijuana serves as a better pain management tool compared to opioids in HIV patients. This study could prove to those who are opposed to the legalization of medical-grade pot for patients who are suffering from diseases epilepsy and certain types of cancers that this is a safer and healthier alternative that prescribing opioids, which has proven to have a very high chance of patient becoming addicted.
In this study, all the participating patients have to provide their own cannabis and report their findings on a weekly basis. While at the moment this study is only focusing on patients with HIV, it could also be helpful evidence for other chronic disease and pain sufferers as to its use.
Is Medical Marijuana a Gateway Drug?
With the rise in popularity and results that medical marijuana has shown as of late, some professionals have noted that the term “gateway drug” may no longer apply when it comes to cannabis, and in fact, a better term may be “off-ramp drug”, especially when it comes to patients weaning themselves off of Oxycontin or other highly addictive prescription pain medications.
While there is still plenty of time to go in the study and far too early to predict any outcomes, the doctors are hopeful that the results will reveal that amongst the many other benefits that cannabis can provide, that also reducing the risk of long term and debilitating addiction can be added to that list.
