Groups Pushing for Legal Recreational Marijuana in Florida
Will Marijuana be Recreational in Florida?
The Florida legal cannabis advocacy group known as Regulate Florida is taking a page out of California’s book in trying to push the issue of fully legalizing marijuana within the Sunshine State. Regulate Florida is headed up by an attorney named Michael Minardi whose goal is to get the 750,000 signatures needed to get this issue addressed by legislators. Initially, the idea was to get these signatures in time for voting in 2018, but it appears that this probably won’t be on the ballot until 2020.
One of Minardi’s strongest arguments for why Florida should pass this law is because of the money it could bring into the state. He claims that legalizing the use of recreational marijuana could be a multi-billion industry for Florida as it has been a cash success for the eight other states that have fully legalized it.
Another catalyst for this movement is because of the recent closures of Tetra Health Centers, or THC, which has caused a bit of chaos for some current medical cannabis patients who were issued their recommendations from the physicians who were associated with them. One of the rules of obtaining a marijuana card in Florida is based on them only having the one doctor who prescribes it to them. Additionally, these doctors are the only ones who can sever the relationship, thus opening it up for the patients to receive treatment from someone else. With these abrupt closings, many of these clients are left without guidance on what to do next.
So between the immense amount of money legalizing marijuana would bring in to Florida and having these occasional roadblocks for current patients, Michael Minardi and Regulate Florida are particularly eager to handle these issues as swiftly as possible.
