Medical Marijuana and Parkinson’s Disease

Dr. Kantilal Bhalani, Parkinson’s Disease, and The Benefits of Medical Marijuana

Dr. Kantilal Bhalani, a medical marijuana supporter and internist of Palm Bay, Florida has been an advocate for medical marijuana for a long time, specifically when it comes to the many benefits it possesses when it comes to Parkinson’s patients. Parkinson’s is a progressive brain disease that affects patients both mentally and physically. There are a lot of issues that surround this disease, and though Parkinson’s itself isn’t deadly, the many complications that arise from it often lead to death.

Parkinsons causes tremors, stiff and achy muscles, fear, dementia, trouble breathing and swallowing, and a host of other problems. This disease is caused by the brain not producing enough dopamine and over time starts to break the body down. There is still no cure for Parkinson’s, but Dr. Bhalani hopes to pass along the message to those in Florida who are suffering from this debilitating disease that they know the positive effects of medical cannabis, as it can positively affect them and the way the disease progresses. In fact, in the early 19th century those who were afflicted with Parkinson’s were given tinctures made from cannabis to help combat the tremors and improve motor function.

Dr. Bhalani explains that there are parts of the brain that are especially receptive to cannabinoids, one of which is the basal ganglia, which is also a part of the brain that is heavily affected by Parkinson’s. There have been several positive findings with patients who are starting to exhibit signs of deterioration that smoking marijuana helps with their pain levels, stiffness, sleep cycles and the slowness of their movements. At the present time, smoking medical cannabis is still illegal in the state of Florida, however, there are alternative methods that are readily available in several counties through Florida medical marijuana dispensaries.

Dr. Bhalani is one of the many physicians in Florida who is legally certified to prescribe marijuana recommendations to potential patients. He has been an active proponent of using this form of medication to treat a variety of diseases since the law passed in November of 2016.
