Veteran Family Sues Over Marijuana License Delays
A recent lawsuit was filed by the father of a veteran who served two tours in Iraq against the FDOH because out of the 10 new growing licenses that were supposed to be issued by October 3rd 2017, only six of them were confirmed. Steve Garrison, father of Matthew Garrison, who ended passing away from his injuries he incurred while serving, is also the proprietor of Bills Nursery. They has applied for a medical marijuana growing license, but because the state of Florida is so behind, haven’t been issued it yet. Steve believes that is they has been granted the license in time that his son wouldn’t have passed so soon because he would have been able to manage his pain better.
The lawsuit was joined by Michael Bowen, who last April has a grand mal seizure on the floor of the senate, and has been fighting to speed up the process of obtaining legal medical cards for marijuana. He feels that the state is purposefully slowing down the issuing process as a way to deny sick patients their legal right to life-saving medicine. Chronic epilepsy is one of the disorders that warrants the use of marijuana according to Florida state law, and Bowen has stated that his illness is so severe he has several seizures daily, which is life-threatening.
Apparently this lawsuit isn’t the first, and won’t be the last if Florida doesn’t come up with the resources to speed up the card issuing process. Reps from the state have confirmed they are working on solutions to expedite the process, but there are many people who are waiting to see the proof as they suffer from debilitating illnesses.
