Florida Officials Get Outside Help for Medical Marijuana Process

Since the beginning of the legal marijuana movement in Florida, the state has really struggled to keep up with the patient’s demands. Since an integral part of the law is each patient obtaining identification in order to lawfully buy cannabis, that can only happen if the state can actually produce the cards in a timely manner. Since the law went into effect patients have experienced extended waiting periods from when they get their recommendation from a doctor to actually receiving their I.D. At the moment there are over 260 new patients on a daily basis, with over 54,000 patients on the registry. Out of those thousands of people, only 29,000 of them are actually holding a legal identification simply because all the time it takes to get those cards processed and printed.

How Big is the State of Florida’s Office of Medical Marijuana?

There are about 35 state employees who work in the Office of Medical Marijuana who were brought on to speed up the care process, but it still isn’t enough. To close that gap Veritec Solutions, an outside data collecting and processing agency has been hired by the Department of Health. Despite Automated Health Systems protests and a case filed against the DOH, Surgeon General Celeste Philip approved the contract so that immediate action could be taken to resolve the shortage in cards, and a legal case will be heard in court in mid-December.

In the meantime, the processing time for new patients to get their cards will hopefully be reduced dramatically.

Florida Medical Marijuana Program Growing

Though the DOH is taking the complaint seriously from Automated Health Systems, it has been agreed upon that delaying the card process any further could result in public health being compromised, and at the rate, the marijuana program has been growing in Florida extending the waiting period could seriously affect potential patients who are suffering from illness or chronic pain.
