Wellington Florida Says Yes To Medical Marijuana Dispensaries
Wellington, the small, family-oriented village with a hometown feel just outside of West Palm Beach, has ok’d medical marijuana dispensaries to open within town limits as long as a few rules are adhered to. Mainly that no dispensaries within 1000 feet of a primary or secondary school, that dispensaries and pharmacies by at least 10,000 square feet in order to operate and that there be only one dispensary or pharmacy per shopping center.
This ruling, which came in on Monday evening, is based on Florida law that either county needs to allow for dispensaries or ban them altogether. The ordinance was passed with a 3-2 vote. However just because the vote passed in the city council doesn’t; mean that everyone involved can proceed concern free. Members of the council are a bit divided when it comes to the opening of cash-only businesses and the fact that marijuana is still considered, on a federal level, to be a Schedule 1 drug, which lumps cannabis into the same category as LSD or cocaine. While there are many who disagree with this assessment, specifically the potential for patients to abuse medical marijuana, this is still the mindset of some government officials.
Some council members mentioned that they are proceeding with caution but are optimistic, stating that they are voting along with 70 percent of the state’s population that is very much in favor of allowing patients who need medical cannabis to have legal access to it. And since Wellington is in the unique position as a build-out to be able to rezone pharmacies it helps ease the residents who are still a bit trepidacious on this measure to ensure that there are rules set in place to keep everyone secure.
