What does Sessions’ position on medical marijuana mean for Florida?

With the announcement from Jeff Sessions at the beginning of January that there are no longer protections when it comes to marijuana, the 64,000 or so Florida patients were a little more than a little concerned. For these people the legalization of cannabis has been a saving grace in its benefits. However several legislators from the Sunshine State are telling their residents to not worry too much. Petersburg based Republican Senator Jeff Brandes, who has been an advocate for the usage of marijuana, particularly when it comes to helping those who are addicted to opioids ease themselves away from it, was quoted saying he wasn’t concerned about state prosecutors coming after cancer patients. He did mention though that this is an issue that would have to be monitored more closely.

Those in the medical marijuana industry, who frankly stand to lose the most, don’t seem to be all the worried either. Medical marijuana is no stranger to attacks, and over the years there have been several lawyers who have tried, and ultimately failed, to tear the system down. The difference is that the industry has grown significantly since the 2013 announcement by the Obama administration to not stand in the way of the legalization of cannabis. At this point cannabis has become such a financial draw that has benefited such a large base that it would indeed be a daunting task to try to eliminate it entirely. Additionally many speculate that in actuality this new memo is really targeting states that have fully legalized marijuana use, Colorado, Washington, and the recently granted California.

The main concern it seems is that those who were looking to invest in this incredibly lucrative industry may be a little gun shy after the announcement to put their hats in the ring. Luckily there are people like John Morgan, the central Florida based attorney who has had a big role in the legalization of medical marijuana in the state, who is planning on investing upwards of $30 million dollars to local businesses in anticipation of investors stepping back. He views it as a great opportunity to join in on growing industry that has no end in sight at the beginning of the movement.
