Sarasota to Allow Medical Marijuana Dispensaries
Sarasota OKs zoning changes to allow medical marijuana dispensaries
Concerned that state legislation has preempted their ability to regulate medical marijuana dispensaries, Sarasota city commissioners have approved a plan to change zoning codes, paving the way for those prescribed the drug to obtain it locally.
Commissioners on Tuesday night unanimously approved changing the zoning codes in four different categories, meaning dispensaries would be allowed in the downtown core, commercial general area, commercial shopping center-regional, and intensive commercial district. Dispensaries will not be allowed on St. Armands Circle, which is zoned commercial-tourist.
Commissioners will vote on the new ordinance a second time at the next meeting scheduled for Feb. 5 in case any changes have been made. Vice Mayor Liz Alpert said she does not anticipate any. Dispensaries would be able to go forward on that date if no new concerns arise.
Alpert said the commissioners voted to differentiate between the zoning of free-standing pharmacies and accessory-use pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens. The city will allow medicinal marijuana dispensaries where free-standing pharmacies are zoned. That way, Alpert said, the city will be able to regulate where the dispensaries set up shop and how many will be allowed to.
