Former NFL Linebacker Turned Doctor Joins The Cannabis Industry
A former linebacker for the Buffalo Bills, Dr. Herve Damas, is shifting his focus to medical marijuana in Florida by opening a brand new facility in Wynwood that will provide medical evaluations and products that contain CBD. This new venture will be called Grassroots Medicine and Wellness Center and is slated to open on May 1st in 2018. This will be the first cannabis clinic in that area.
Damas’s journey into the medical cannabis industry began with some injuries that ended his career with the Bills early. After he stopped playing professional football he started looking into becoming a wellness guru, and after his mother fell ill in 2002 he returned to school to pursue a degree in medicine.
Because of his football injuries and other conditions that left him in a state of pain constantly be began taking opioids and sleeping pills to cope with the discomfort. Sadly these medications only lead to headaches and anxiety and didn’t really help with the pain at all. Though initially, he resisted, he started using marijuana to handle his symptoms, and was pleasantly surprised to discover he was able to sleep, had reduced anxiety and could focus again.

He earned his medical degree in 2013 and after the Florida medical marijuana bill was passed in 2016, Damas decided he would dive headfirst into the cannabis field. He started by speaking to other former NFL players who suffered from injuries and used cannabis to help them heal. Part of the reason why he’s setting himself up in Miami is due to the large population of former professional athletes in the area.
At the moment he’s operating out of Lab Miami, which provides medical marijuana evaluations and issues recommendations to his patients. Once his wellness center opens on May 1st he’ll be offering a variety of services, including nutritional counseling, mental health evaluations, and medical marijuana services with an additional element of holistic healing approaches.
