Floridians Have More Access to Medical Marijuana
What’s the latest with Florida medical marijuana?
Governor Rick Scott signed a bill on June 23 that eliminated the 90-day wait for a medical marijuana card. Â Now Floridians who qualify, can have faster access to their cards that allow them to purchase legal cannabis. The Palm Beach Post reports that about 20,000 patients have registered already with the state and some believe that the count could rise to 500,000. Â People who think they may qualify can see a certified physician for about $200 for an exam (CalmEffect has doctor appointments starting at just $99). If the physician recommends medical marijuana, the patient applies to the Office of Medical Marijuana Use for a state ID card, which costs $75. According to the Post, access to medical marijuana dispensaries isn’t always easy, but there are delivery services.
Florida’s cannabis sales have ramped up so quickly after Amendment 2 passed because the state already had created a budding marijuana industry. Sales of so-called non-euphoric marijuana oil began in 2016 to patients with cancer, seizure disorders, and other ailments.
Marijuana has gone so mainstream that fully 71 percent of Floridians voted in favor of Amendment 2 in November, during the same election that saw Donald Trump easily win the state.
Despite the electorate’s embrace of weed, pot remains a touchy political subject. Jeff Sessions, Trump’s attorney general, has hinted at a crackdown in states such as Colorado and Washington, which allow the sale of recreational marijuana. Pot remains federally illegal, rendering it an all-cash business.
