Cost of the Medication is Shutting Many Out

Ever since Florida voters voted in favor of medical marijuana legalization in a 2016 referendum, the state has witnessed an increasing number of patients applying for medical marijuana cards.

The effectiveness of medical marijuana in treating conditions where conventional medicine has failed is attracting many to the therapy. Marijuana has been shown to provide instant relief for patients suffering from chronic pains, inflammation, anxiety disorders and severe seizures including regular epileptic seizures and Dravet Syndrome.

An average of 2,500 new applications is received each week by the Office of Medical Marijuana Use registry at the Department of Health for those seeking the required permission to use the drug.

Although this increase affirms the acceptability of medical marijuana as a viable treatment therapy by the patients, the process to gaining eligibility, the associated cost of physical evaluation and marijuana itself can pose many prohibitive roadblocks for many.

Take the case of Laura (not real names) for whom the news of a positive vote at the referendum meant relieve from the seizures that had become a part of her life. Laura, 18 was diagnosed with severe regular epilepsy and suffered from as much as 10 epileptic seizures a week.

She was fortunate to have taken part in a year-long clinical medical marijuana trial and the result was instant relief from her seizures. However, with the trial period ended, Laura and her parents are forced to pay for the treatment.

Unfortunately, the process to put her on a regular regime is out for their pay range as everything would be out-of-pocket since insurance does not cover medical marijuana. Regular doctor’s visit costs $200 per visit asides the $650 cost of marijuana medicine per month she has to purchase.

On a Dock worker’s salary, the cost of treatment is overwhelming for Laura’s father.

To get approved for medical marijuana therapy in Florida, a patient is expected to first prove a potentially qualifying condition that state-approved physicians required to corroborate. Some of the medical conditions that qualify for medical marijuana cards include glaucoma, epilepsy, PTSD, cancer or chronic pain.

The cost of an average dose of about 100 milligrams of medical marijuana in Florida would cost patients between $500 and $750 per month. Methods of delivery include tincture droplets, oils, topical creams, vaping, capsules, patches, and even suppositories; it may not be smoked in bud form.

Remember, because medical marijuana is still illegal under federal law, it’s an all-cash business.
