Medical Marijuana to Treat Back Pain

Lower back pain is one of the most common complaints found in the health industry. Most people will experience it at one point in their life, while others regularly undergo significant back pain that interferes with their daily lives. Those that suffer from such chronic back pain may be unable to function or work for many days out of the year.

Because Marijuana is noninvasive and may help with swelling and pain, those in the medical field are increasingly supportive of using medical marijuana to treat back pain.

The Severity and Frequency of Back Pain Varies Person to Person

Back pain is different for everyone. For some, it’s a lingering, chronic pain that is dull and nagging. For others, it happens periodically and is sharp to the point of making it difficult to walk. Over time the spine changes and these changes can have an impact on symptoms experienced. Ruptured discs, Osteoporosis, Spine curvature, Sciatica, and Arthritis are all examples of conditions that cause lower back pain. Of course, there are other variables that can cause back pain as well. Whatever the cause, it can significantly interfere with a person’s day to day activities. It’s not surprising that back pain represents one of the most common reasons that people seek medical care, or self-treat their condition.

Different Types of Pain

When considering medical marijuana to treat back pain, it’s useful to be aware of the type of pain specific to you. Consider the four types of pain below.

  1. Mechanical Pain: This is the most common form of pain in the lower back. It stems from your ligaments, muscles, bones, and joints. It tends to localize itself in the buttocks, lower back, and top of the legs. It may hurt to sit, stand, twist, rest, and perform strenuous activities.
  2. Radicular Pain: This type of pain happens when the spinal nerve root becomes pinched or swollen. It tends to feel like the pain goes all the way down your leg or buttock, and may follow a certain pattern when you feel it. It feels electric and may be followed by numbness on one side of the body.
  3. Nociceptive Pain: The receptors of the body notice potentially harmful stimuli. The receptors send the message to your brain that you have an injury, by making you feel pain. It is a deep throbbing, aching, or soreness. The pain eases as the injury heals.
  4. Neuropathic Pain: An injury occurred that damaged the nerve tissues. Once you have damage, the receptors continue sending the pain signals even though the injury has healed. Pain travels down the sciatic nerve and can stretch from the buttocks to feel.

Surgery and injections are common solutions for back pain, but many people are put off by the invasive nature of these procedures. An alternative solution gaining favor among those suffering from lower back pain is medical marijuana, as it is noninvasive and doesn’t cause the same side-effects as traditional treatments. Medical marijuana may help reduce or eliminate your lower back pain and help you live a more active life. It may also eliminate the need to take potentially dangerous and addictive pain medications. Marijuana may also help you if you suffer from depression, insomnia, or anxiety related to your pain. Medical Marijuana to treat back pain may be exactly what you need to experience a higher quality of life.
