State Summary

Georgia has very limited cannabis access, allowing only low-THC oil (up to 5% THC) for specific medical conditions since 2019. Recreational use is completely illegal, though some cities have decriminalized possession. The state prohibits cannabis flower, edibles, smoking, vaping, and home cultivation. Over 25,000 patients are registered for low-THC oil access through licensed dispensaries and participating pharmacies. The 2025 legislature is considering bills to expand access, including allowing higher-THC products, vaping, and adding more qualifying conditions. However, these efforts face significant political resistance. Georgia remains one of the most restrictive states for cannabis access in the nation.

Process to get a Medical Marijuana Card

The process includes: 1) Get diagnosed with a qualifying condition, 2) Obtain certification from a licensed Georgia physician, 3) Apply to the Low THC Oil Registry, 4) Pay the required fees, 5) Receive your registry card and purchase from licensed dispensaries or participating pharmacies.

Conditions Approved for Medical Marijuana Use

For low-THC oil, qualifying conditions include: cancer, ALS, seizure disorders, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, mitochondrial disease, fibromyalgia, sickle cell disease, Parkinson's disease, Tourette's syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, epidermolysis bullosa, Alzheimer's disease, AIDS/HIV, peripheral neuropathy, intractable pain, and PTSD. Patients can possess up to 20 ounces of low-THC oil.

Telemedicine Rules
State Regulatory Body

Yes, patients must register with the Low THC Oil Registry, which is managed by the Georgia Access to Medical Cannabis Commission.

Application Process

Renewal Process

The registration costs and renewal schedule vary. As of late 2024, over 25,000 patients were enrolled in the registry. Cards typically need to be renewed annually.
