PTSD and Marijuana

PTSD is a severe anxiety disorder caused by past trauma. Car accidents, combat, and abuse are all examples of trauma that can cause PTSD. PTSD can manifest as feelings of intense fear, nausea, dizziness, and chronic insomnia, all of which can last for many years, even decades. The many veterans returning from overseas who suffer from PTSD often go untreated because nothing seems to help. Medical Marijuana may be an effective way to treat such cases.

Three characteristics displayed in people suffering from PTSD

  1. A sense of reliving past trauma over and over again, coming in the form of flashbacks or nightmares
  2. Increased general sense of arousal, hypervigilance, producing feelings of paranoia, panic, and a sense of apprehension or foreboding
  3. Avoidance of situations associated with the event, even towards activities once enjoyed.

These characteristics are often marked by feelings of nausea, anxiety, anger, self-medicating behaviors, and deteriorating relationships; only making it more difficult for PTSD sufferers to live their lives peacefully.

Traditional Treatment Options for PTSD

PTSD is usually treated through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), but CBT sometimes isn’t always enough for some sufferers. Medication can also be used to treat insomnia, anxiety, and depression, but medication alone isn’t usually a complete solution, and can sometimes lead to severe, unwanted side-effects. Because PTSD is, and can, be such a complex disorder, many standard treatments don’t always work. Medical professionals are always on the hunt for new methods for treating PTSD effectively, and medical marijuana represents one of the options that has shown a lot of promise.

PTSD and Marijuana – Treating Symptoms Medically

Studies show that medical marijuana can help alleviate symptoms of PTSD, even in the most severe cases. At the same time, cannabinoid receptors are found in many different areas throughout the body and the brain, so mental and physical symptoms are treated at the same time. Those that have PTSD and have access to medical cannabis as a treatment option have often responded well, and many prefer it over traditional forms of treatment.
