Further, on 5/19/20 – The Louisiana House of Representatives approved bills letting doctors recommend medical cannabis for any debilitating medical condition and to allow for medical marijuana delivery services.

On, 5/28/20 – The Louisiana Senate approved a House-passed bill to allow doctors to recommend medical marijuana for any debilitating condition they see fit. The House needs to sign off on one last amendment before it goes to the desk of Gov. John Bel Edwards (D).

6/17/20 – Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) signed a bill that will let patients get medical cannabis for any debilitating condition their doctors see fit. He also approved legislation on marijuana business banking access and legal protections for doctors.

8/3/20 – A new Louisiana law allowing doctors to recommend medical cannabis for any debilitating condition they see fit took effect.

Louisiana has had therapeutic or medical cannabis legislation on the books since 1991. However, before the past few years, it hasn’t had much success because there were no protections in place that made it worth the risk for doctors to recommend and patients to seek. It wasn’t until August 1, 2019, that the first round of state-approved medical cannabis was ready to be available for patients.

Doctors must be certified by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners to recommend medical marijuana to patients. CalmEffect is working hard to develop our doctor network in Louisiana and we expect more doctors to become certified as the state’s program matures.

Cannabis remains illegal for recreational usage throughout the state. First-time possession of the drug remains a criminal offense but was decriminalized statewide in 2015 to a $300 fine and/or 15 days in jail. Possession of marijuana has also been decriminalized in the cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge.  See the full details here.
