South Carolina Lawmakers Approve Medical Marijuana Bill In Subcommittee Vote
Last update: March 20, 2019A South Carolina Senate subcommittee voted Wednesday to advance a bill that would legalize access to medical marijuana. The legislation, known as the Compassionate Care Act, now moves to the full Senate Medical Affairs panel for discussion and a possible vote.
The subcommittee vote of 5 to 1 came after lawmakers approved several amendments to the bill. Some of those changes include narrowing the list of medical conditions that would qualify a patient to legally use medical cannabis, banning certain workers from being able to access the treatment and requiring physicians to have specific qualifications before being able to recommend marijuana.

10/19/20 – South Carolina Democratic Senate candidate Jaime Harrison spoke about his support for legalizing marijuana.
8/31/20 – House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) confirmed that congressional leadership intends to hold a September floor vote on a bill to deschedule marijuana and fund programs to repair the harms of the war on drugs.Â
