The Phish Summer tour is a rather unique one, with a mix of southeast amphitheaters, on to Madison Square Garden, and a traditional Labor Day close at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
As cannabis becomes legalized in more and more states across the country, it’s important to know the rules, follow laws and maintain a safe environment for all of those involved.
Laws continue to change around the country allowing more and more medical patients and non patients in adult use states to consume cannabis. Given that Phish fans are excited about the upcoming tour, we wanted to layout the 2023 cannabis landscape, on tour, to help Phans enjoy the incredible music, legally.
What do you need to enter a dispensary?
If the state is a medical state, you need to have your medical marijuana card with you.
What will you find at a dispensary?
Dispensaries typically carry flower, tinctures, vapes, topicals and edibles. Each state and store has there own product assortment
What if you can’t attend a Phish concert this year?
That’s ok. There’s always the next tour. Take advantage of the couch tour where Phans can listen to the streamed shows at home. No ticket required! Sometimes the shows are aired over SiriusXM, other times you can subscribe to the official video feed for a fee, and sometimes there are even more options.
Phish’s Spring and Summer Tour 2023- State by State Cannabis Rules
The 2023 Summer tour starts off in some non-cannabis friendly states but this 35 date tour eventually migrates through some of the now-cannabis legal states by the end. Many of the stops in the middle are transitioning from medical to adult use, but still haven’t started selling from recreational dispensaries. It is important to always follow the law. Phish Huntsville, AL July 11 and 12 Orion Amphitheater

The Venue: Orion Amphitheatre is a brand new 8,000 capacity amphitheater just west of Huntsville near 255. Near the iconic Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, Huntsville is again making its claim to a premier hot bed of music. The amphitheater features themed food and beverage ares inside and Apollo Park outside. Having opened in 2022, Orion Amphitheater has already seen visits by Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews Band, and Kenny Chesney.
Alabama State Cannabis Laws: Alabama has approved a medical marijuana program and is working on the roll out process. Doctors are currently seeing patients and approving cards, but there are no dispensaries yet.

The Venue: Ameris Bank Amphitheatre is a modern 12,000 seat outdoor amphitheater in the northern Atlanta area.
Ameris Bank Amphitheatre opened as Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park in 2008 and in late 2018 Ameris Bank acquired the naming rights.
Georgia State Cannabis Laws: Georgia has a very limited medical cannabis program and adult use is still illegal.

The Venue: Live Oak Bank Pavilion at Riverfront Park is an outdoor amphitheater. The 7,200-person Live Nation venue has 2,400 seats and room for 4,800 on the lawn. Both Widespread Panic and Trey Anastasio Band played the amphitheater in its inaugural year, 2021.
North Carolina Cannabis Laws: North Carolina has not yet rolled out a medical marijuana program. It is still not legal to smoke or possess marijuana in the state

The Venue: Many concertgoers who have been seeing shows or trading tapes for years may recognize this venue as Star Lake Amphitheatre. This Live Nation amphitheater has room for approximately 23,000 fans- 7,100 in reserved-seating and 16,000 on the general-admission lawn. It’s been called Coca Cola Star Lake, Post Gazette, First Niagra, Key Bank and S&T Bank Music Park. Dave Matthews Band has played the most shows at the Amphitheatre
Pennsylvania State Cannabis Laws: Pennsylvania has a thriving medical marijuana program. Many expect adult use to be approved soon, but as of this writing, recreational marijuana use remains illegal.

The Venue: St Jospeh’s Health Amphitheater used to be called Lakeview Amphitheater. It’s an is an outdoor concert venue located on the shores of Onondaga Lake near western Syracuse, New York. It a part of the Empire Expo Center, home to the Great New York State Fair. The State Fair Coliseum, original home of the Syracuse Nationals (now Philadelphia 76ers), is nearby. The Amphitheatre opened in 2016 and averages between 15-20 shows per summer season. Zac Brown Band and REO Speedwagon have both played the venue four times.
New York State Cannabis Laws: According to the New York Office of Cannabis Management, Cannabis is legal in New York for adults 21 and older but you can only consume it in a private home or at a state-licensed on-site consumption site. The smoking of cannabis is prohibited anywhere smoking tobacco is prohibited. However, there are now approved locations to sell cannabis legally.

Phish Philadelphia July 25 and July 26 Pavillion at the Mann

The Venue: TD Pavilion at the Mann is a recently renovated outdoor amphitheater. Even with a large covered pavilion area and expanded grass sections, the venue is on the smaller side of stops for Phish’s 2023 summer tour. Just northwest of downtown Philadelphia PA, many fans are excited about this stop on the tour.
Pennsylvania State Marijuana Laws: Pennsylvania has an active medical marijuana program, but has not yet launched its recreational program.

The Venue: Madison Square Garden is located in Midtown Manhattan in New York City. Phish has been playing at MSG for years, sometimes multiple times per year. Phish has played 72 shows at Madison Garden over the years.
New York State Cannabis Laws: According to the New York Office of Cannabis Management, Cannabis is legal in New York for adults 21 and older but you can only consume it in a private home or at a state-licensed on-site consumption site. The smoking of cannabis is prohibited anywhere smoking tobacco is prohibited. However, there are now approved locations to sell cannabis legally.

Visitors to NY may find unlicensed dispensaries in NY that are circumventing marijuana sales rules. Quality of products and legality are still unknown.

The Venue: Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City CO is a modern soccer stadium. The Denver area is fan friendly. With a wide variety of entertainment options, outdoors and indoors, trips to this region can be full of enjoyment. While in town take advantage of visiting a brewery, going for a hike, or see if you can also visit Red Rocks amphitheater.

How do you get a Phish Concert Ticket?
Tickets have been on sale since March. Check the phish.com website for info.
What to expect at a Phish show?
You’ll find Phish fans grooving to the incredible music. Each fan has their own unique dance enjoying the moment and experience. Phish plays music from a variety of genres- jazz, folk, funk, rock- songs with room to jam. Each time Phish sings a song, they might sing it a little differently than the last time, much like the Grateful Dead. Whether you have a ticket in an arena, a ticket in the pavilion, or a ticket on the lawn, you can have a great experience. At different points in the evening, some of the audience listens to the sounds, others are there to people watch, and everyone is there to enjoy time with their friends.
Outdoor shows really provide a unique experience. When night falls, expect a visually stimulating light show after dark. Videos and lasers add to the show, complimenting the music.
What songs will Phish sing at a show?
Well, that’s the great thing about Phish, you never know what they’ll play. They can choose songs from their vast catalog like Tweezer or You Enjoy Myself or from among a variety of covers like Sneakin Sally through the Alley and 2001. Perhaps they’ll dig deep into their catalog to bust out something that hasn’t been played in a while?
What is the pre-show Phish scene?
Arrive to the parking lot early in the day to take advantage of the lot scene. Relax with friends, hook up with other Phish fans and enjoy the pre-party. Often their is a main, informal vending area, referred to as Shakedown Street, where you can find t-shirts, lot supplies, food and other items for sale..
Doors open typically a couple of hours before show time. That gives Phish fans who take advantage of the early admission and are seated on the lawn a chance to grab their patch of choice to set up home base!
What if you can’t attend a Phish concert this year?

The Venue: The Xfinity Center is an outdoor amphitheater, set in a more rural setting in suburban Massachusetts. Most Phans still refer to the venue as Great Woods. The amphitheater has held concerts since the summer of 1988. Bands such as Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, and The Allman Brothers Band have hit Great Woods multiple times over the years. Phish played some of their early large shows at Great Woods in 1994 and 1995. Mansfield is located off of 495 between Providence and Boston. Mansfield is also a quick drive to Cape Code for those Phish Fans looking to take advantage of the MA beaches during the day and shows at night!

We’re expecting many to take the trek up to be near the scene of Woodstock.

The Venue: Jones Beach is a rather unique venue built onto a marina. An amphitheater without a lawn, it has multiple concrete levels to view the show. Boats can even dock close enough to the facility to hear some tunes. This venue typically doesn’t sell alcohol so if you’re looking forward to a bar during the show, make other plans! Fans with rock concert tickets usually enjoy their experience on Jones Beach NY.

Although not at the heights of other Phish festivals like the Clifford Ball, The Great Went, and Lemonwheel, the Atlantic City weekend still feels like a weekend getaway

The Venue: Alpine Valley Music Theatre is an outdoor amphitheater, similar to other “sheds” across the country. East Troy WI’s Alpine Valley is always a highlight on bands’ tours. Centrally located for both west coast and east coast travelers, this amphitheater is huge and sometimes offers on grounds camping. East Troy WI is actually 90 minutes north of Chicago and just 40 minutes from Milwaukee. If you can score concert tickets to a show at Alpine Valley, we recommend taking advantage!
Wisconsin State Cannabis Laws: Wisconsin has not yet rolled out a medical marijuana program. It is still not legal to smoke or possess marijuana in the state. Cannabis is recreationally legal in Illinois, but you don’t want to get caught crossing the Wisconsin border with any weed.

Nestled by Portage Creek, Orange Beach AL has hosted many great shows over the years. Orange Beach AL is only about 45 min west of Pensacola FL. Tickets for these shows may be in demand given the holiday weekend kickoff by the band.

The Venue: Credit One Stadium is an outdoor tennis center. Word has it that Widespread Panic was not allowed to play there anymore. Hopefully the venue is more accepting of fans now. Charleston, a charming town to visit, should be on everyone’s bucket list. The tennis stadium is new to concerts, but we are seeing additional acts holding dates.
