Rhode Island

State Summary

Rhode Island legalized recreational cannabis in 2022, becoming the 19th state to do so, with retail sales beginning in December 2022. The state allows home cultivation (6 plants), has reasonable possession limits (1 oz), and operates both medical and recreational markets. Rhode Island has implemented social equity provisions and generates cannabis tax revenue for various state programs. Despite being the smallest state, Rhode Island has successfully established a comprehensive cannabis market serving both patients and adult consumers. The state continues to expand access while maintaining regulatory oversight.
