Starting with just a handful of dispensaries and a few thousand patients, Florida's medical marijuana program now serves over 800,000 qualified patients through a network of more than 450 dispensaries statewide. The OMMU has continuously evolved its regulations to improve patient access while maintaining strict oversight.Key milestones include the 2018 addition of smokable flower as a legal product form, the 2019 implementation of a streamlined patient registration system, and the 2023 expansion of qualifying conditions. The Florida OMMU currently oversees one of the nation's largest medical marijuana programs. The Department operates through a vertically integrated system where licensed Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers (MMTCs) handle everything from cultivation and processing to dispensing products directly to patients.The program encompasses 22 licensed MMTCs operating throughout Florida, each offering a comprehensive range of products including flower, vapes, oils, tinctures, topicals, edibles, and concentrates. The OMMU's regulatory framework ensures all products undergo rigorous laboratory testing for potency, contaminants, and safety before reaching patients.The OMMU maintains strict standards through regular inspections of cultivation facilities, processing centers, and dispensaries. Their patient registration system allows qualified individuals with physician recommendations to access medical marijuana products through a state-issued registry ID card.The Department continuously updates its platform to improve user experience, with features like online applications, renewal reminders, and a verification system for law enforcement.
