Our story
Dharma Pharmaceuticals made history as Virginia's first licensed medical cannabis dispensary, opening its doors in October 2020 in Abingdon, Southwest Virginia. Founded as a locally operated company, Dharma was committed to bringing high-quality medical cannabis products to Virginia's patients with deep ties to southwest Virginia communities.The company quickly established itself as one of only five licensed pharmaceutical processors in Virginia, permitted to grow, process, and retail cannabis directly to patients. Dharma distinguished itself by being the first to legally dispense medication to Virginians, marking a pivotal moment in the state's cannabis history.In May 2021, recognizing Dharma's potential and strategic position, Green Thumb Industries acquired the company for an undisclosed amount, officially closing the deal in July 2021. The acquisition included Dharma's operating production facility and retail location, expanding Green Thumb's presence into Virginia's limited-license market of 8.5 million people. Today, Dharma's legacy continues under the RISE Dispensaries banner, maintaining its commitment to serving Virginia's medical cannabis community.

Currently operating as part of Green Thumb Industries' RISE Dispensaries network, the former Dharma locations serve Virginia through six retail dispensaries across the state, including the original Abingdon facility and locations in Salem, Bristol, and Danville. The company operates manufacturing facilities in both Abingdon and Alleghany County, with the newer facility serving as GTI's 19th manufacturing location nationwide.Product offerings include Green Thumb's award-winning portfolio of cannabis brands: RYTHM flower and concentrates, Dogwalkers pre-rolls, incredibles edibles, Doctor Solomon's topicals, Beboe luxury products, and &Shine value options. Products range from botanical cannabis flower to cannabis-based items including muscle rubs, tinctures, and edibles, all manufactured to pharmaceutical-grade standards.All products are regulated by Virginia's Board of Pharmacy and Cannabis Control Authority, with facilities inspected for compliance and third-party lab testing for pesticides and heavy metals. Virginia locations feature convenient "Roll-Thru" drive-through service for medical cardholders, allowing advance reservations and curbside pickup.
