Michigan State Police Amend Vehicle Search Policy to Accommodate New Marijuana Law
Michigan State Police will be revising their agency’s policy for searching vehicles to accommodate the state’s new recreational marijuana law. Battle Creek Police said they (and other) law enforcement agencies throughout the state are re-evaluating how they utilize and train police K-9s. 8 out of the state’s 45 drug dogs in the state are trained to detect marijuana.
State Police will have to hash out some technical complications caused by the new regulations. For example, if someone with illegal substances in the vehicle claims that they have marijuana, the officers will have to find a drug dog that is not trained to search for marijuana to sniff around the car again. Officers in the state say they have plans to cross these hurdles, most of which do not include narcotic K-9s.
