Medical Marijuana Issued For Mental Health Management in Florida
Recently a convicted felon who committed a murder back in 1999 was granted medical marijuana by a Florida state judge as a way to manage his schizophrenia. The patient, 34 year old Miguel Valdes, served time in prison and is out now on probation for the crime he committed when he was only 15 years old. He was released in 2010 and claims that using medical marijuana overwhelmingly helps keep his symptoms at bay, helps him sleep, which helps keep his mood stabilized. Though there were several objections from the prosecution on this issue, the judge agreed that he could participate in the medical marijuana program as long as he was being monitored regularly.
Medical Marijuana for Schizophrenia
This has a been hot button issue in the courts due to the patient’s violent history and the fact that it’s not common for those with a prison record to be granted the legal right to use any sort of drug like marijuana. Additionally, schizophrenia was not listed under the law as one of the ailments that would warrant a patient obtaining a medical card. But as doctors learn more about the benefits of medical cannabis there have been some exceptions made, which has lead many to speculate that this is the first case of a felon being granted the right to the use of marijuana, he most certainly won’t be the last.
Will Medical Marijuana Show Up in a Drug Test
Just to be clear though, the Florida Department of Corrections is monitoring this patient’s use in conjunction with the courts. Since he does possess a legal medical card he can’t be punished if marijuana is found in a drug test, but that doesn’t rule out being tested for other substances, which he will be regularly.
